Magnitude 3.0 quake north of Hatcher Pass felt in Anchorage, Wasilla

A magnitude 3.0 earthquake shook Chugiak, Wasilla and Anchorage late Sunday. It was the largest in a weekend cluster of small quakes across the Susitna Valley.

"We have reviewed a magnitude 3.0 event that occurred Sunday, 7/26, at 10:06 PM AK time. This event was located 27 miles SE of Talkeetna and 9 miles deep," the Alaska Earthquake Center said. The center placed the epicenter 22 miles north of Hatcher Pass, 31 miles northeast of Willow and 62 miles north of Anchorage.

Smaller quakes of magnitude 2.0 to 2.9 were recorded near Petersville and Susitna North between Saturday night and Sunday night.

The center attributes crustal earthquakes in the region to three major sources. Those are the faults and folds of the Cook Inlet basin, the Castle Mountain Fault, and a wide band of diffuse seismicity that extends from northern Cook Inlet to the Denali Fault. Alaskans who felt the shaking can file a report through the U.S. Geological Survey's "Did You Feel It?" system.
