Kusilvak unemployment hit 16.1% in May, more than three times the statewide rate

Kusilvak Census Area recorded a 16.1% unemployment rate in May 2026, more than three times the statewide figure of 4.1% that month, according to Bureau of Labor Statistics sub-state data published Monday.

The gap reflects a stark disparity between urban and rural labor markets across the state.

Bethel Census Area came in at 10.1% the same month. Yukon-Koyukuk Census Area sat at 9.4%. Northwest Arctic Borough reported 8.8%. All four regions sit in western and Arctic Alaska, where communities depend on seasonal subsistence cycles and resource industries that do not produce year-round payrolls. At the other end of the range, Denali Borough recorded the lowest rate in the state at 2.5%.

Anchorage Borough, which holds the largest share of Alaska's civilian labor force, reported 4.7% in May. That figure is close to the statewide average, while the rural rates reflect conditions that differ substantially from the headline number.

The statewide rate has recovered from a January 2026 peak of 5.6%, falling to 4.1% by May and 4.2% by June, BLS data show. The statewide figures are seasonally adjusted, while the sub-state local-area rates come from a separate BLS data series and are not directly comparable on that basis.

Measurement Limitations

Sen. Lisa Murkowski raised a related measurement concern at a June 2026 U.S. Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee confirmation hearing for a BLS commissioner nominee. "BLS tracks consumer prices in major urban areas," Murkowski said, "but my sense is that it is less effective in capturing the astronomical costs that we see in our more remote parts of Alaska, our off-road communities, whether it's the cost of goods, fuels, air freight, transportation."

Similar questions about whether national statistical frameworks adequately reflect conditions in remote Alaska communities have been raised in other contexts as well.
