The Ketchikan Gateway Borough signed a snow removal contract with Magnum Enterprises for Homestead Service Area roads Oct. 15 and 16, according to the Homestead Service Area agenda packet. Payment is capped at $25,000.

Magnum will be paid $90 an hour for plowing, $60 per yard of sand and 54 cents per pound of ice melt.

Magnum must have roads plowed before 6 am. If the company misses that deadline, the borough can have someone else do the work and bill Magnum the difference in cost.

Crews must clear Old Homestead Road once new snow passes half an inch. Fawn Mountain, Big Rock, Anchor Ridge and Misty Mountain roads get plowed at 3 inches, thresholds the service area board kept in August. Drifting snow or unsafe ice also triggers service.

The account the contract is charged to spent about $21,600 last fiscal year against a $15,000 budget, the year-end report shows.

The contract runs through June 30, 2027, with up to four one-year extensions. The Homestead Service Area board is scheduled to hear a snow removal update Thursday, Oct. 29.
