Kenai Peninsula Borough Assembly sets Sept. 1 hearing on school board term limits

Kenai Peninsula Borough voters would decide whether school board members face term limits under an ordinance going to public hearing Tuesday, Sept. 1, before the borough assembly.

The measure, Ordinance 2026-26, amends borough code sections KPB 1.20.100 and 4.30.010 to establish term limits for school board members. Testimony is limited to three minutes. The meeting begins at 6 p.m. in the Betty J. Glick Assembly Chambers in Soldotna. Remote participation is available via Zoom, and the official agenda lists current access credentials.

Sponsors listed on the agenda are Assembly members Dale Eicher, Ryan Tunseth and Lenora Niesen, along with the mayor. Tunseth is assembly president. Eicher has said state law "doesn't currently allow municipal governments to place term limits on school board members." The borough can now propose them because state law changed this year.

The assembly is also set to act on the ballot wording. A borough clerk item, referred to the Policies and Procedures Committee, would approve the proposition summary for the voter pamphlet for Proposition No. 1, the term limits question.
