Juneau waterfront shelter design heads to VITF 2.0 on July 30

A covered waiting shelter and public restroom planned for Peratrovich Plaza on downtown Juneau's waterfront will come before the City and Borough of Juneau's Visitor Industry Task Force 2.0 on July 30. The meeting is scheduled for noon in Assembly Chambers and via Zoom.

The agenda also includes a CBJ Law Department update on changes in the legal landscape since VITF 1.0, a discussion of data collection and long-term tourism planning, and a review of draft minutes from the July 9 meeting.

The 2,736-square-foot building would provide standing room for roughly 180 people, seating for about 90, and a 12-foot operable door connecting to the Seawalk. The restroom wing includes men's and women's facilities with eight fixtures each and a single-occupancy family restroom.

City and Borough of Juneau Docks and Harbors described the purpose plainly in project documents: "This project is planned to install a much needed restroom facility and waiting area on the decked over area known as Peratrovich Plaza."

The project fits within CBJ's waterfront policy under Resolution 3011, which directs the city to complete the Seawalk and manage cruise congestion. Juneau currently enforces a daily limit of five cruise ships and a passenger cap of 16,000, dropping to 12,000 on Saturdays. An April 7, 2026 open house sought community input on year-round uses beyond visitor-serving functions.

Some residents have argued that waterfront improvements prioritize cruise growth over quality of life, a tension that has surfaced in prior public debate over downtown infrastructure.

The project team includes Port Director Carl Uchytil, Port Engineer Matthew Sill, Harbormaster Matt Creswell, architect James Bibb of NorthWind Architects, and Brandon Ivanowicz. The next VITF 2.0 meeting is scheduled for August 13, 2026.
