High Wind Watch: gusts to 70 mph possible in Eastern Alaska Range Tuesday–Wednesday

A High Wind Watch is in effect for the Eastern Alaska Range north of Trims Camp from Tuesday morning through Wednesday morning, with gusts up to 70 mph possible for anyone traveling or working in that area.

NWS Fairbanks issued the watch at 1:56 p.m. AKDT Sunday. It runs through 7 a.m. AKDT Wednesday. Travelers in the Eastern Alaska Range north of Trims Camp face the greatest risk, particularly those in high-profile vehicles. South winds of 25 to 40 mph are forecast, and NWS Fairbanks warns that "Damaging winds could blow down trees and power lines. Travel could be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles."

The zone has drawn repeated wind alerts this summer. Wind advisories for the same area ran July 10 and 11, with gusts forecast up to 45 to 50 mph on those days, well below what forecasters now consider possible Tuesday into Wednesday. NWS Fairbanks advises anyone with plans in the area to "Monitor the latest forecasts and warnings for updates."
