Heat advisory covers Lower Matanuska Valley through 8 p.m. Monday

Residents of the Lower Matanuska Valley unaccustomed to warm weather face a risk of heat-related illness through 8 p.m. AKDT Monday, when a heat advisory issued Sunday by the National Weather Service in Anchorage remains in effect. Forecasters expect afternoon temperatures in the middle to upper 70s and overnight lows only in the low to mid-50s.

Forecasters rated the advisory moderate in severity. "Individuals not accustomed to these unusually warm temperatures for this region may experience heat related illnesses," the advisory said.

The weather service told residents to drink plenty of fluids and check on elderly and vulnerable relatives and neighbors. It advised limiting strenuous activity to early morning or evening, wearing sunscreen and loose clothing, and watching for symptoms of heat exhaustion. Closing curtains during the day and opening windows at night helps cool a house, the advisory said, along with fans or community buildings with air conditioning.

Anchorage is under a separate special weather statement, issued Sunday for the Anchorage Bowl, the Hillside and Eagle River, also rated moderate severity. It calls for highs in the low to mid-70s and overnight lows in the 50s through Monday early evening, with warmer readings inland and cooler air along the coast.

The same Mat-Su zone was under a heat advisory from July 31 through Aug. 1, when forecasters called for highs of 74 to 82 degrees. This warmth follows an unusually cool month. The Alaska climate summary for July 2026, published Aug. 5, found Anchorage, Fairbanks and McGrath each recorded their coolest July in more than a decade.

Monday is forecast sunny and hazy with highs in the mid-70s. Scattered showers return Tuesday.
