Fire Weather Watch issued for Delta Junction through Sunday
The National Weather Service issued a Fire Weather Watch for Delta Junction from Saturday afternoon through Sunday evening. Forecasters warn that critical fire weather conditions are possible this weekend.
Southeast winds of 10 to 20 mph with gusts up to 40 mph are expected. Relative humidity will drop to 15 to 20 percent. Temperatures will reach the upper 70s. The combination of low humidity, gusty winds, and dry fuels creates the potential for rapid fire spread.
Relative humidity values are expected to be lower on Saturday. Winds will be stronger on Sunday. One limiting factor is the influx of moisture coming in from the south on Sunday, which could reduce the severity of fire weather conditions.
A Fire Weather Watch indicates critical fire weather conditions are possible. It remains in effect until it is upgraded to a Red Flag Warning or forecasters determine the Red Flag event will not develop. The National Weather Service issued a Red Flag Warning for Delta Junction on May 16-17 for similar conditions. The Alaska Division of Forestry & Fire Protection suspended burn permits for the Delta Fire Prevention Area on June 4 due to elevated fire danger from dry conditions and warm temperatures.
The suspension prohibits burning debris piles, lawns, and the use of burn barrels. Cooking and warming fires remain allowed with extreme caution.
