Federal money for elder abuse work, with a deadline next week

Alaska's senior population has grown faster per capita than any state's over the past decade, in a state that ranks among the highest in the country for domestic violence and sexual assault. Federal money is now available to work on where those two things meet, and the deadline is next week.

The Justice Department is offering grants of $450,000 to $750,000 to organizations serving Alaskans 50 and older who face abuse, neglect or financial exploitation, including domestic violence, sexual assault, stalking and economic abuse. Tribal governments, nonprofits, victim service providers, states, local governments and tribal coalitions can all apply. No matching funds are required.

The department expects to make 12 awards nationally, totaling $8 million.

An initial form is due Sept. 14 and the full application Sept. 16.
