City of Kodiak — Historic Preservation Commission Meeting

The Kodiak Historic Preservation Commission (HPC) is scheduled to meet on October 1, 2026, at Fisherman's Hall. The agenda includes updates on the Historic Interpretive Panels Project, the Historic Inventory Project, and the Griffin Memorial Hospital building design and lease application. The commission will also discuss NAPC membership and Commission Assistance and Mentoring Program (CAMP) training opportunities. Minutes from the June 5, 2026, meeting indicate that the commission approved the April 7, 2026, minutes and discussed the Historic Interpretive Panels Project with Sarah Asper-Smith of Exhibit AK. Deputy City Manager Josie Bahnke provided updates on the Russian-American Magazin drainage project, the Historic Preservation Fund grant, and the Griffin Memorial Hospital building. The commission also reviewed Section 106 consultations for the Kodiak Airport and ADA Rezanof Drive projects. Regarding the Griffin Memorial Hospital building, the City Council has decided not to sell the property and is considering a joint lease application from the Kodiak Maritime Museum and the Kodiak History Museum. The building, located at 316 Mission Road, has a combined assessed value of $1,432,900. The commission is evaluating design intent statements to guide the building's rehabilitation for contemporary use. The commission has been awarded a $10,025 grant from the Alaska State Historic Preservation Office for NAPC membership and CAMP training. Staff are seeking direction on training topics and formats for the spring 2027 sessions. Additionally, the commission is planning a strategic planning work session for late October 2026.
