Denali ranger dies in crevasse fall near 14,000 Foot Camp
A National Park Service mountaineering ranger died Thursday after falling into a crevasse near 14,000 Foot Camp on Denali, the park announced Friday.
The ranger was Robin Pendery of Enumclaw, Washington. Pendery was a seasonal mountaineering ranger assigned to Denali National Park and Preserve and joined the park's mountaineering staff in 2024.
The fall happened around 2 p.m. Thursday while Pendery was on a climbing patrol. Park Service personnel responded immediately, but Pendery did not survive.
The incident remains under investigation. The park said no additional details were available Friday.
"We are heartbroken by the loss of a member of our Denali family," Superintendent Brooke Merrell said in the release. "Our mountaineering rangers dedicate themselves to serving visitors and helping others in one of the most challenging environments in the world. Today, we mourn the loss of a valued colleague, friend and teammate. Our thoughts are with Robin's family and loved ones."
