BLM closes Campbell Tract trail segments through July 25 for fuel break work

Short segments of three Campbell Tract trails are closed through July 25 while crews clear vegetation and maintain fuel breaks at the 730-acre Special Recreation Management Area in the heart of Anchorage.

The closures cover portions of the Speedway, Viewpoint, and Moose Meadow trails. Trail access outside the affected segments remains open where safe. Visitors should follow posted closure signs and use alternate routes.

Why the Work Is Happening

The fuel breaks being maintained were established more than 20 years ago through a partnership between the Bureau of Land Management's Anchorage Field Office and the Municipality of Anchorage. The work reduces hazardous vegetation and improves the tract's resilience to wildfire, helping protect nearby communities, recreation opportunities, and natural resources.

Campbell Tract is a 730-acre Special Recreation Management Area in the heart of Anchorage, adjacent to Far North Bicentennial Park. It draws more than 500,000 visitors annually.

Not the First Closure

This is not the first time managers have pulled segments of Campbell Tract offline for safety reasons. BLM, the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, and the Municipality of Anchorage Parks and Recreation jointly closed several trails in Far North Bicentennial Park and Campbell Tract in August 2025 due to heightened bear activity.

The fuel treatment work is scheduled to conclude by July 25.
