AT&T's parking lot at the Anchorage port could stay until 2041

A 1.2-acre parking and storage yard at the Don Young Port of Alaska has been leased to AT&T Alaska since 2011. Under a measure the Assembly takes up Sept. 15, it could stay leased to the company for another 15 years.

The ordinance does two things. It ratifies a five-year renewal that runs through April 2031, and it adds two more five-year options after that, carrying the lease to 2041.

Rent for the current term is $65,339 a year, about $327,000 over five years. What the company would pay during the two later options has not been set.

The renewal took effect in April, before the Assembly voted on it. City code treats a renewal after the initial term as a new lease, and leasing city land requires an ordinance, which is why it is on the agenda now. AT&T covers utilities and maintenance on the site, and the administration recommends approval.
