Public gets its first say as soon as September on an open-pit mine 22 miles from Kobuk
Residents of the Ambler mining district could get their first chance to comment on a proposed open-pit mine 22 miles northeast of Kobuk as soon as September, under a permitting schedule the project's sponsor announced July 16.
Trilogy Metals Inc. said the schedule for the Arctic copper, zinc and lead project targets a notice of intent to prepare an environmental impact statement in September 2026, a draft statement in October 2027 and a record of decision in September 2028. It follows Ambler Metals' April 20 Clean Water Act Section 404 application to the Corps and the project's May 15 acceptance under FAST-41, a 2015 law that sets a published federal timetable.
The notice of intent opens scoping, when the public tells agencies what the environmental study should examine. No such period has opened.
The Federal Permitting Dashboard's May 14 posting lists the review as in progress, records zero of fifteen permitting processes completed and estimates completion by Nov. 26, 2028. The dashboard cautions that listing "does not imply Federal endorsement" or presume approval.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Regulatory Division is the lead agency, with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration also holding authorizations to issue. No resident, tribal government or local body appears in the record.
