Anchorage airport noise study to present operational alternatives Aug. 25

Operational alternatives meant to reduce aircraft noise over Anchorage neighborhoods go before the Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport noise study's advisory committee on Aug. 25, the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities said in its August airport update.

The consultant team will present the alternatives and lead discussion with committee members. Input from the Study Advisory Committee will help refine recommended mitigation measures before the Part 150 study moves into its final phases.

The study is producing a Noise Exposure Map and a Noise Compatibility Program. Together, they will identify current and future noise exposure around the airport and guide mitigation and land-use decisions.

An earlier Alaska News article on the study noted that the airport planned mitigation-alternative meetings for mid-summer 2026, following February community engagement that drew residents concerned about aircraft noise near their homes.

What the committee recommends does not settle where planes fly, and it may not settle who hears them. The study website notes that some operational alternatives could shift aircraft noise between neighborhoods rather than eliminate it. Relief for one area could mean new exposure for another. The site also says flight tracks will be examined, but adds that "flight pattern procedures are under the sole purview of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), considering operational, safety, and air traffic control procedures."
