The Anchorage Municipal Ombudsman, the Alaska State Ombudsman and the State of Alaska Long Term Care Ombudsman will explain their roles at a free event. "Ombuds Day 2026: The Office of Options" starts at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 8, in the Wilda Maton Theater at Loussac Library.

The Anchorage Assembly passed a resolution Oct. 6 recognizing that date as Ombuds Day. Sponsors include Assembly Chair Anna Brawley, Vice Chair Daniel Volland, Mayor Suzanne LaFrance and members Erin Baldwin Day, Goecker, Handeland, Johnson, Martinez, McCormick, Park, Perez-Verdia and Silvers.

The resolution describes ombuds offices as independent, informal, confidential and impartial. It says the Home Rule Charter's Bill of Rights guarantees residents an ombudsman. The municipal office opened in 1977.

The office opened 224 new cases and closed 229 in 2025, according to its annual report. Its recommendations led to a $50 transit refund and a revised City Hall code of conduct.
