Alaska's EMS compact takes effect Sunday; the national commission still lists the state as pending

Alaska joins the interstate EMS Compact on Sunday, Sept. 20, giving clinicians with a valid, unrestricted license in another member state a Privilege to Practice here, a right to work on that license. New guidance warns it does not by itself let anyone start work.

The Interstate Commission for EMS Personnel Practice does not list Alaska among the 25 states where the privilege is valid, recording it as pending implementation. The guidance sets out electronic and manual verification paths, not whether Alaska is in the national database.

Before an out-of-state clinician goes on duty, agencies must confirm identity, verify the home-state license and privilege, finish local credentialing, get medical director authorization and document it. If a record is not in the National EMS Coordinated Database, verification may go through the state office or home state.

Nor does it work outward. "An Alaska EMS license does not automatically establish eligibility to exercise a Compact privilege in another state," the state Office of Emergency Medical Services said Wednesday.
