Juneau's city-owned ski area has carried EPA's most urgent water violation for six months

Eaglecrest Ski Area, Juneau's city-owned ski hill, has carried the EPA's most urgent drinking water violation for six months, with no return-to-compliance date recorded in snapshots pulled Sept. 11 and Sept. 14.

The area's public water system, AK2110643, serves 771 people. It is a transient non-community system EPA classifies as a restaurant, with three service connections.

EPA's Safe Drinking Water Information System logged a health-based treatment technique violation there, a failure of required treatment, on March 1, 2026, flagged for Tier 1 public notification, the highest urgency level under EPA's Public Notification Rule, requiring suppliers to notify affected people within 24 hours. Contaminant code 0300 is EPA's Interim Enhanced Surface Water Treatment Rule.

State records show 11 informal enforcement actions there, including a December boil water notice, and no formal one. Alaska DEC's 2023 compliance report logged 4,451 federal violations against 566 public water systems, 43 percent of the state's systems, with 1,968 resolved that year, and one formal enforcement action.
