Alaska joins EMS compact as 24th state, briefing set for Sept. 2

Alaska has joined the United States EMS Compact, but out-of-state paramedics and EMTs cannot yet begin working in the state under the compact's Privilege to Practice. The verification system needed to process their credentials has not been built.

The compact's website lists Alaska's law as effective by Oct. 1, 2026. An August guidance document from the Alaska Office of EMS sets the date at Sept. 20, 2026, under House Bill 110. State officials have not explained the discrepancy.

The office is telling clinicians to wait for further instructions before paying background-check fees or submitting fingerprints. National Registry certification alone does not grant a privilege to practice in Alaska. Agencies must still receive approval from a physician medical director before assigning duty to an out-of-state provider.

The Alaska Office of EMS will explain the changes in a 90-minute virtual briefing set for Sept. 2, from 1 to 2:30 p.m. The session is free and part of the state's RANGES continuing education series. Registration is open through Zoom, and the recording will remain available afterward on the Department of Health's learning management system.

Speakers also plan to cover licensing, EMS for Children, data collection and training requirements.
