Alaska draft rule would require daily marijuana inventory reconciliation at stores

Alaska retail marijuana stores would have to reconcile point-of-sale transactions and current inventory against the state's tracking system at the close of business each day, under a technical draft rule from the Department of Commerce, Community, and Economic Development. Product manufacturing facilities would face the same daily deadline, reconciling each transaction rather than a daily total. Both would need to account for any variance between quantities received and quantities sold, transferred, or disposed of.

The draft repeals four tracking sections that have applied separately to cultivation, retail, manufacturing, and testing facilities since Feb. 21, 2016. It consolidates them into a single rule covering marijuana product "from either the seed or cutting" until sale to a consumer or destruction. Cultivation facilities would assign a tracking number to every mature or flowering plant. A board memorandum counted 481 marijuana licenses up for renewal as of Jan. 27, 2026.

Receiving facilities would have to reject any delivery lacking a valid transport manifest and document differences between manifested and received quantities.

The register number and effective date remain blank; the rule has not yet been adopted. Inventory tracking is on the Marijuana Control Board's agenda for its Sept. 22 special meeting, a Zoom-only session beginning at 9 a.m.
