Leachate Evaporation at Mat-Su Central Landfill
video • Alaska News
So the system started operating on October 20th, and since then we've actually evaporated almost 600,000 gallons, which is about 100 trips to Anchorage. That's actually saved us about 6 cents a gallon, so if you do the math, it's a pretty significant number in a very, very short time. The thermal evaporation system is designed to handle really tough wastewaters and leachate, and it's built— what we like about this unit is it's very rugged and it's simple, right? And so that's something I think in these kind of environments, as we know, in landfills, you need things that are, that you know you can rely on and that they're going to work. Over time, all the solids will settle down at the bottom.
So we're the only evaporation system in the state of Alaska that's actually using methane from the landfill to operate. Everybody else does it differently. So we're the first, we're leading the way.
