Aaliyah is a soft voice for sure. When she came to TCLL, she said, "Maybe this is my clan, I'm not sure." So we went with it, and then the next year she said, "Miss Nay, this is— my mom gave me her Tlingit name." And she just continually grew into knowing who she was, and this year she's really locked in. Last year as well, but this year she's really locked in, and if I ask her to do something, she's happy to do it. The Tlingit Culture, Language and Literacy program celebrated its inaugural 8th grade graduation Tuesday, with students delivering speeches and presentations entirely in Tlingit after years in the immersion program.
