Wasilla's 20-year road plan has expired, with no replacement yet

Wasilla no longer has a current road plan. The city's Official Streets and Highways Plan covered fiscal years 2005 through 2025, and its horizon has passed with no replacement adopted. The plan called for review and updating at least every five years, but the meeting packet does not show when those reviews occurred.

Acting City Planner Crystal Nygard told commissioners Aug. 11 that the Roads Master Plan "has expired" and that a request for proposal to update it will be issued soon. The Parks and Trails Master Plan, adopted Oct. 24, 2011, will also go out for proposal.

The expired plan guided street widenings, traffic signals and new road connections, and it supported the city's project nominations to the state. It was built on 2005 population projections that put the greater Wasilla area at 77,399 people by 2025. Its list of recommended projects tracked status as of September 2005, so it does not show which of those projects remain unbuilt today.

Both master plan updates appear on the Wasilla Planning Commission's Sept. 8 agenda as discussion items, not votes. The meeting starts at 6 p.m. in the Wasilla City Council Chambers at City Hall, where public comment is limited to five minutes under Resolution Serial No. 26-08.
