Washington teen cited for snagging sockeye on Kasilof River

A Washington teenager was cited for snagging and retaining a sockeye salmon on the Kasilof River late Wednesday night, Alaska Wildlife Troopers reported Saturday.

Troopers contacted the 16-year-old visitor at approximately 11:24 p.m. on July 9 on the river. Investigation confirmed he had snagged and kept a sockeye. He was issued a strict liability citation for the violation.

Under Alaska law, a fish hooked anywhere other than the mouth must be released immediately.

All charges are accusations. The teenager is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
