Valdez council sets second work session on property tax exemptions for Aug. 19

Valdez homeowners get another chance to hear how the city might change its property tax exemptions. The Valdez City Council is scheduled to hold a second work session on property tax exemption options, listed as Part 2, at 6 p.m. Wednesday in Council Chambers, followed by a regular meeting at 7 p.m. The city calendar notes the meeting date moved because of the state primary election. The listing marks the work session as discussion only. No vote is scheduled.

The council held the first session Aug. 4. Available records do not identify the specific exemption changes under consideration. The review could involve adjustments or clarification of existing exemptions rather than a wholly new program.

For 2026, primary homes in Valdez are automatically exempt from the first $79,505 of assessed value, up from $77,862 the previous year. The city clerk's March update set the figure, which adjusts annually for inflation. Alaska law authorizes municipalities to exempt or partially exempt residential property by ordinance and caps a local voter-authorized exemption at $75,000 before annual inflation adjustment. That cap helps explain how Valdez's current amount has risen above it. Valdez also exempts the first $150,000 for qualifying seniors, disabled veterans and some surviving spouses, and $10,000 for residents who volunteer in firefighting or emergency medical services. Most applications are due to the City Clerk's office by Jan. 15.
