Two die in a median-crossing crash on the Glenn Highway

Two people were killed Thursday morning on the Glenn Highway when a pickup crossed the median near the S Curves and slammed into oncoming traffic, in a crash that also left a child fighting for their life.

Anchorage police say a Ford F-150 crossed from the northbound lanes into southbound traffic around 8 a.m. and struck three vehicles. The F-150's driver and the driver of a Kia Soul were both killed at the scene, and a child riding in the Kia was rushed to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. Two other drivers were unhurt. The wreck shut down the busy Anchorage–Mat-Su commuter corridor for much of the day.

The S Curves have a hard reputation. The stretch carries heavy daily traffic between Anchorage and the Valley and has seen serious crashes before — enough that the state has a Glenn Highway safety project in final design, and the road's dangers have drawn political attention after a pedestrian was killed there in June.

Police haven't released the names of the two who died, pending notification of their families. The investigation is ongoing.
