TCC boat trip brings policymakers face-to-face with Interior village needs
Tribal, state, and federal decision-makers traveled by boat into four remote Interior Alaska villages on June 15-16, hearing directly from Tribal leaders, Elders, and community members about housing shortages, healthcare gaps, public safety deficits, crumbling infrastructure, and economic development needs.
The Tanana Chiefs Conference held its Annual Partners Boat Trip, visiting Nikolai, Telida, McGrath, and Takotna along the upper Kuskokwim River drainage. The recurring trip gives policymakers firsthand context on conditions in communities that sit well off the road system, where geographic distance can make needs easy to overlook. TCC represents 42 Interior Alaska villages and more than 10,000 Alaska Natives.
The itinerary included community tours, project site visits, cultural exchanges, and shared meals. TCC says those conversations cannot be replicated through reports or virtual meetings alone.
"Strong partnerships begin with our tribes," Chief/Chairman Sharon Hildebrand said, framing the trip as a tool for ensuring tribal voices shape decisions rather than react to them. TCC extended appreciation to the communities of Nikolai, Telida, McGrath, and Takotna for their hospitality, and to all partners who made the trip.
