Sterling man summonsed for reckless driving after 85 mph dirtbike run through safety corridor

A 20-year-old Sterling man faces a reckless driving charge after troopers clocked his dirtbike at 85 mph in a 45 mph safety corridor on the Sterling Highway Tuesday night.

Soldotna troopers spotted David Fairbanks traveling southbound near Milepost 84 at approximately 10:21 p.m. on July 21. When they moved to stop him, he did not yield. He continued through several gravel roads before returning to the Sterling Highway and stopping.

Troopers issued Fairbanks a criminal summons for reckless driving, a misdemeanor carrying up to one year in jail, a fine of up to $1,000, and a minimum 30-day license suspension. The Milepost 84 stretch carries a safety corridor designation, marking it as a stretch with higher than average rates of serious injury and fatal crashes.

Fairbanks is presumed innocent.
