State seeks public comment on North Slope solid waste lease by May 27

The Alaska Department of Natural Resources is accepting public comments through May 27 on a proposed 20-year lease for a solid waste staging site near Prudhoe Bay. Colville Solid Waste, LLC, has applied to lease five acres of state land near the Alpine Service Area.

The department plans to issue the lease to allow the company to stage solid waste materials on the site. The lease would run for 20 years on land currently owned by the state.

The department has issued a preliminary decision approving the lease under state law governing disposal of state resources. Anyone who wants to appeal the final decision must submit written comments during this public notice period.

Written comments must be received by 5:00 p.m. on May 27, 2026. Comments should be sent to Haley Evans at the Department of Natural Resources, Division of Mining, Land and Water, Northern Regional Lands Section, 3700 Airport Way, Fairbanks, AK 99709-4699. Copies of the preliminary decision and supporting documents are available from the Northern Regional Land Office. The final decision will be sent to everyone who submits comments and will include information about the appeal process.
