State puts 18 Fairbanks timber sales up for bid Aug. 21

The Division of Forestry and Fire Protection will auction 18 Fairbanks-area timber sales by live oral outcry at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 21, at the Fairbanks DNR Office, 3700 Airport Way.

Bidders must hold a current Alaska Business License and post at least 10% of the opening bid in cash, certified check, cashier's check or money order. Personal checks are not accepted. Agents need notarized power of attorney. Winning bidders must execute a contract and submit a performance bond within 30 days of the auction.

The official notice states that "the STATE neither expressly nor implicitly warrants its volume estimate, or the quality or marketability of the timber sold."

A Bonanza Creek Salvage site visit is set for Aug. 7. The Fairbanks-Delta Area Forestry office can be reached at 907-451-2603. Sales drawing no qualified bid may be offered over the counter at the appraised value.

The auction is one step in the state's continuing Fairbanks-Delta timber-sale planning process. The division has issued a final 2026-2030 Fairbanks-Delta Five-Year Schedule of Timber Sales, which outlines proposed sale activity on the Tanana Valley State Forest and other state land but, in the agency's words, "is not a decision document." A prior Fairbanks-area auction, held Oct. 3, 2025, offered eight timber sales totaling 76 acres.

Local loggers and small operators are the primary potential bidders. The deposit and bonding obligations shape which outfits can realistically take part in the timber economy around Fairbanks. Environmental advocates argue that Alaska's state timber program, including Interior sales, prioritizes extraction over long-term forest health and carbon storage, and that five-year schedules and auctions can lock in harvest levels absent stronger environmental standards.
