Skagway's national park hosts a leashed-dog tour for National Dog Day
Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park is inviting Skagway's dogs and their people on a free evening walking tour next Wednesday, Aug. 26, tied to National Dog Day and the National Park Service's 110th birthday.
The self-guided, leashed-dog tour runs from 5 to 7 p.m., starting and ending on the Moore House lawn at 5th Avenue and Spring Street. Along the way, participants can meet park rangers and pick up small tokens for taking part. It's a fitting theme for a Klondike park: as the park's Tyra Olstad noted, the sled dogs that hauled gear for the stampeders more than a century ago have their modern echo in the pets residents and visitors bring to Skagway today.
The tour is part of National Park Week, which this year runs Aug. 22 to 30 around the Park Service's Aug. 25 anniversary. Dogs are welcome throughout, on a leash — and service dogs, of course, can go anywhere in the park.
