Missing camper found five miles off trail near Port Heiden

A woman reported missing near Port Heiden early Friday was found alive Saturday afternoon, about five miles off an area trail, the Alaska State Troopers said.

A local pilot spotted her at 2:55 p.m. Saturday. Searchers reached her by ATV and took her to a local clinic with minor injuries.

Her dog stayed with her the entire time she was lost. It reportedly chased off a bear at one point, according to the trooper dispatch.

Troopers were notified at 1:29 a.m. on Aug. 7 that an adult woman was missing near the Bristol Bay community. She had been camping with a companion. Local residents and troopers searched by ATV and fixed-wing aircraft the rest of that day without success. The U.S. Coast Guard joined residents and troopers when the search resumed Aug. 8, the day she was found.

The dispatch, posted Saturday evening by C Detachment, does not name the woman or describe how she became separated from her camp.
