Klondike Highway closes weeknights for rockfall work near Skagway

Overnight Closures on the Klondike Highway

Drivers cannot use the Klondike Highway between Milepost 4.8 and 5.4 from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m., Monday through Friday, while crews carry out rockfall work near Skagway. The full closures are in effect while the U.S. border station is closed, the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities said.

The highway stays open earlier in the evening under flagging. Alaska 511 lists single-lane closures and delays of up to 10 minutes from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. Crews are on site from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. on weekdays. The pull-off at Milepost 5.0 is closed for the duration of construction.

"What crews are doing: stabilizing steep slopes through rock scaling and bolting, removing and installing protective netting to keep debris off the roadway, and improving roadside drainage, guardrails, and paving," the department said in a notice posted to its Facebook page.

Route and Updates

The route links Skagway to Dawson City, Yukon. The corridor has a history of unplanned interruptions from geologic and weather hazards. A rock slide and severe winter conditions forced an overnight closure of the South Klondike Highway between the U.S. border and kilometer 80 in October 2025. Wildfire closed the North Klondike Highway between Stewart Crossing and Pelly Crossing in June 2024. Message boards on the Klondike Highway will post advance notice of closures.
