King Cove road materials arrive as local workers train for project

A barge carrying equipment and materials for the King Cove-Cold Bay Road project has arrived in King Cove, marking a construction-prep milestone weeks after the state received the final federal permit for the long-disputed road.

The Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities said Friday that the shipment supports stockpiling and preparations for work ahead. More than 20 King Cove residents completed safety training and earned department certificates in less than five days, the department said. Five more community members are enrolled in a four week course to earn Class A commercial driver's licenses.

The department's post does not say when road construction will begin.

The project would connect King Cove with Cold Bay's all-weather airport, a route supporters have sought for decades for medical evacuations and travel reliability. Alaska News reported in July that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers issued the last federal permit needed for construction, clearing the way for work while litigation and environmental objections continued over the road's route through Izembek National Wildlife Refuge.

The new update from the department is narrower in scope. It confirms materials and equipment have reached King Cove and that local residents are training for project work.
