Juneau approves $1.5M negotiated City Hall sale to Sealaska Heritage

The City and Borough of Juneau Assembly voted 6-3 Monday, Aug. 17, to adopt Ordinance 2026-38. The measure authorizes the manager to sell City Hall at 155 Heritage Way to Sealaska Heritage Institute for $1.5 million through a negotiated agreement. The municipal record lists no closing or title-transfer date.

The vote rejected an alternative the Assembly had carried since March: a sealed competitive bid with a $2.5 million minimum.

At the Assembly's July 27 meeting, Douglas resident Carol Bookless said the city was "considering selling the $2.5 million City Hall property for $1.5 million." She said CBJ "needs to be transparent and consistent" on land deals.

Sealaska Heritage Institute plans a 30,000-square-foot arts facility on the site. Demolition is estimated at more than $1 million. Construction is expected to cost about $40 million over a four-year fundraising timeline.
