Homer library board to draft capital improvement recommendations Tuesday

The Homer Library Advisory Board will begin drafting recommendations Tuesday for the city's Capital Improvement Plan, a step that shapes which library upgrades reach the City Council's funding list. The board meets at 5:30 p.m. Aug. 18 in Cowles Council Chambers at Homer City Hall, and by Zoom or phone.

Also on the agenda: a fundraising plan, the Library Donation Account, 20th-anniversary celebrations and library director reports for May, June and July. Public comment is capped at three minutes.

The Capital Improvement Plan guides nonrecurring city projects that create fixed assets lasting at least three years. Library projects have made the list before. A September 2023 memorandum reported that the Homer City Council adopted a plan with three library projects, moving all three from the tentative section into the midrange section.

The city's 2045 comprehensive plan update gives the board a role in assessing the library's growth needs. Draft guidance describes an engineering study covering a larger meeting room, more study rooms, a teen room, storage and an outdoor covered space. Those are spaces patrons use, and Friends of the Homer Library helps fund them.

The board's next meeting is set for Sept. 15.
