GSA awards $5.4 million building repair contract to Juneau's Goldbelt Government Services

A federal contract worth $5,399,116 is headed to a Juneau company for building repairs, though the government has not said which building or where. Goldbelt Government Services is a subsidiary of Goldbelt, Incorporated, the Alaska Native corporation established for Juneau under the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act. The corporation reports more than 4,000 shareholders and says federal contracting revenue funds local development. The subsidiary describes itself as a Small Business Administration "8(a) applicant," a status that allows qualifying small businesses, including those owned by Alaska Native corporations, to receive federal contracts without full open competition. The award record does not identify this contract as an 8(a) set-aside, and neither Goldbelt nor GSA has detailed the scope of the repair work.

That program has drawn scrutiny before. In three reports issued between 2006 and 2016, the Government Accountability Office found persistent weaknesses in Small Business Administration oversight of Tribal 8(a) firms, particularly Alaska Native corporation subsidiaries. GAO said those gaps can distort competition for other small businesses seeking federal work, a concern that remains relevant whenever an Alaska Native corporation subsidiary wins a contract without a stated set-aside designation.
