About this event
The City of Utqiaġvik, in partnership with the Native Village of Barrow, the North Slope Borough, and the Ukpeaġvik Iñupiat Corporation, is hosting two events to celebrate the United States' 250th birthday. These events are part of 'Alaska’s Week of Dreams,' which is presented by Global Credit Union.
The first event, a community storytelling session, will take place on June 30 at 6:30 p.m. in the City Chambers. This session will feature Elders, MLB Ambassadors Greg A. Harris and DJ Carrasco, and State Historian Dr. Katie Ringsmuth, who will discuss the history of baseball in the Arctic.
The second event is scheduled for July 1 at 10:00 a.m. at the COU Softball Field. Participants will have the opportunity to play 'Anaraġauraq,' also known as 'Eskimo Baseball,' alongside Elders, youth, and the visiting MLB Ambassadors.
America250-Alaska is an initiative led by the Alaska Office of History & Archaeology. The commission's mission is to engage Alaskans in the 250th anniversary of the United States, with a thematic focus on 'History for Tomorrow,' inspired by the 1956 Alaska Constitutional Convention.
