Eastern Brooks Range guide camp comment window opens July 23

A big game guide has applied to replace portable-camp limits with fixed camp structures at a remote Eastern Brooks Range site, and the public has until 5 p.m. on July 23 to weigh in.

Rudy "John" Martinez, doing business as Northern Sky Expeditions, has asked the Alaska Department of Natural Resources to amend his existing land use permit to allow a skid-mounted cabin, a tent platform, and a pit privy at the confluence of Your Creek and the Middle Fork Chandalar River, roughly 24 miles northeast of Chandalar Lake. The amendment would allow a fixed installation from May through October for a five-year term, 2026 through 2031, replacing a rule requiring portable camps to move at least two miles after 14 days.

Approval is not assured. The Division of Mining, Land and Water said it may issue an authorization with stipulations and that "the activity may be modified during the review and adjudication process."
