Bethel commissioner resigns, leaving seat to be declared vacant Aug. 5

A fourth seat is about to open on Bethel's Public Safety and Transportation Commission. John Hastie has resigned by email, and the commission is scheduled to declare his seat vacant Wednesday, Aug. 5. The six-member panel already has one regular and two alternate seats empty.

"Due to changes in life circumstances and availability, I am resigning from the City of Bethel Public Safety and Transportation Commission," Hastie wrote to the city on July 9. He said his last meeting will be Aug. 5, attended virtually.

The agenda lists the vacancy declaration under Bethel Municipal Code 2.60.030, the provision governing seats lost to absence or resignation. Chair Joy Anderson leads the commission, which will need to fill four seats once Hastie's departure is formalized.

Other business on the agenda includes a table discussion on a proposed taxi fare increase, taxicab prices involving Kusko and Alaska Cab, the police blotter and city pound statistics.

The commission meets at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 5. Residents who want to weigh in on the fare proposal may send written comments to [email protected] by 4 p.m. that day.
