Bethel City Council to vote Aug. 11 on $55,000 road salt order

Bethel would buy $55,000 worth of salt for its streets and roads under a measure the Bethel City Council takes up Tuesday, ahead of freeze-up.

The measure would authorize the city manager and the city's purchasing agent to start the order. City Manager Strickler is listed as the sponsor on the agenda posted Aug. 5. The item is filed as AM 26-17.

It is the only new business item on the agenda not marked for the consent agenda. Consent items pass together when the council approves the agenda. The salt order will require its own vote.

Bethel has bought road chemicals in bulk before. In a 2016 bid solicitation, the city wrote that it "wants to purchase the largest quantity of calcium chloride it can for $50,000 and the largest amount of sodium chloride it can for $50,000," with delivery to the City Shop on Ridgecrest Drive.

The council meets at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in Council Chambers at City Hall.

Residents can weigh in two ways. Written comments go through the city's submission form and are due 24 hours before the meeting. Anyone who wants to speak in person may do so under People to Be Heard, where each speaker gets five minutes. That option does not require advance written comment.
