Anchorage Assembly to vote on $787,758 for two AFD ambulances
The Anchorage Assembly votes Tuesday on $787,758 to buy two new ambulances for the Anchorage Fire Department, replacing units the department says have reached the end of their service life. Delivery is not expected until fall 2027, with the build running 19 months from the date the purchase order is placed.
The two new units are expected to replace Medics 5 and 9. Once placed into service, Medics 5 and 9 would move to reserve status and replace Units 26 and 27, which are scheduled for disposal because of age and condition. The purchase also covers delivery to the Port of Alaska, comprehensive vehicle and module warranties, and factory inspection trips for three AFD employees before final acceptance.
A Three-Unit Replacement, Split Into Two Purchases
This is the second ambulance buy in three months. AFD purchased one unit in April 2026 but could not buy all three at once. Contract Administrator Steven Brister wrote that AFD was unable to purchase 3 ambulances at that time due to lack of approved bond funding. The two purchases together complete the three-unit replacement the department originally sought.
Brister also noted that the replaced units will be auctioned due to age and not being viable remount options.
Funding is split across approved capital budget appropriations in BP2025 and BP2026 under the Fire Department Capital Improvement Program. If the Assembly approves the measure Tuesday, AFD will place the order and the 19-month build begins.
