State seeks public comment on Crowley fuel facility spill plan in Galena

The Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation is accepting public comments through May 28 on Crowley Fuels' oil spill prevention and response plan for its bulk fuel storage facility in Galena.

The facility stores more than 1 million gallons of gasoline, aviation fuel, diesel, and heating oil in tanks near the Yukon River. The plan outlines how Crowley would respond to a spill of up to 98,000 gallons, the maximum discharge the state requires the company to prepare for.

The Galena facility sits 400 feet north of the Yukon River at 7th Avenue and H Street in old town. It operates a warehouse, barrel fill rack, truck loading rack, and pump house that supply refined fuel products to the community.

Crowley Fuels submitted the plan renewal application to meet state requirements under Alaska Statute 46.04.030. The state acknowledges a potential risk of oil spills entering Alaska lands or waters from the operation.

Residents can submit comments online at dec.alaska.gov/comment or by writing to Timothy Elwood at the Department of Environmental Conservation, 555 Cordova Street, Anchorage, AK 99501. Comments must be received by 11:59 p.m. on May 28, 2026.
