State imposes spring weight limits on Kenai Peninsula roads April 13

The Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities will restrict weight limits on most Kenai Peninsula roads starting April 13 at 8:00 a.m. to protect pavement during spring thaw.

Most paved state roads south of Ingram Creek Bridge at Seward Highway Mile 75 will be limited to 75 percent of legal axle weight. Gravel roads in the same area drop to 50 percent. The restrictions apply to the Sterling Highway, Seward Highway, Kenai Spur Highway, and other state-maintained roads in the region.

Some road segments will carry different limits. The Sterling Highway from Mile 37 to Mile 44, Mile 55 to Mile 157, and Mile 169 to Mile 175 will allow full legal weight with no overloads. The Seward Highway from Mile 0 to Mile 26 and Mile 37 to Mile 75 will also remain at 100 percent.

Other sections, including Sterling Highway Mile 44 to Mile 55 and Seward Highway Mile 26 to Mile 37, will be restricted to 85 percent of legal axle weight. Long combination vehicles of 90 feet or more with at least two trailers can carry 100 percent legal weight on drive axles only on these roads.

The Old Seward Spur in Anchorage will be limited to 50 percent of legal axle weight.

The department will post authorized weight restrictions only on its Division of Measurement Standards and Commercial Vehicle Enforcement webpage. Information on 511 or other sites is for reference only.
