Anchorage airport taxiway redesign begins with electrical engineering contract

The Alaska Department of Transportation is seeking an electrical engineering firm to design power systems for a major overhaul of Taxiway Y at Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport, part of a broader set of infrastructure improvements at the state's busiest airport.

The electrical work supports civil engineering upgrades already underway on Taxiway Y, which handles aircraft movement between runways and gates. The selected contractor will design new electrical infrastructure, plan demolition of existing systems, and create construction-ready specifications for the project.

The taxiway improvements run from June 2026 to December 2029. The electrical design contract is expected to cost less than $200,000.

Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport ranks as the third-busiest cargo airport in the world and serves as a critical refueling stop for international flights crossing the Pacific. The airport has secured multiple federal and state grants in recent years for runway, taxiway and terminal improvements to maintain its competitive position as air cargo patterns shift.

The winning firm will prepare sections of the project's engineering design report, assist during bidding, provide design closeout documentation and support construction crews.
