Petersburg Medical Center wins state approval for new MRI services

The Alaska Department of Health has approved Petersburg Medical Center's application to add MRI services in a newly constructed medical office building.

The hospital will install a 1.5-ton Siemens MRI unit in 1,329 square feet of an 18,980-square-foot building that will also house administrative offices and maintenance support. The project is limited to $3.1 million in MRI-related costs.

Construction was completed in December 2025. The new services will serve Petersburg Borough and surrounding remote communities in Southeast Alaska.

The state issued its Certificate of Need decision on April 30. Any member of the public substantially affected by the project may request an administrative hearing within 30 days of that date. The deadline is May 30.

Hearing requests must follow procedures outlined in state regulation 7 AAC 07.082 and be submitted by email to [email protected].

Petersburg Medical Center applied for the certificate on July 22, 2025. The state reviews such applications under Alaska Statute 18.07 and related regulations to determine whether new health care services meet community needs.
