Nunapitchuk landfill permit open for public comment through May 22

The Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation is accepting public comments through May 22 on a proposed solid waste disposal permit for the Nunapitchuk landfill.

The permit would authorize the City of Nunapitchuk to operate a 4.5-acre landfill for municipal trash, cooled ash, construction debris, and inert waste. The site serves 590 residents in the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta community.

The landfill would also include staging areas for vehicles and white goods like refrigerators and stoves. A tundra pond next to the site is no longer used for disposal.

Residents can submit written comments electronically at dec.alaska.gov/comment or by mail to Rebecca Colvin, ADEC Solid Waste Program, 555 Cordova St., Anchorage, AK 99501. Comments can also be sent by email to [email protected] or fax to 907-269-7510. The deadline is 11:59 p.m. on May 22, 2026.
