Juneau electric bills could jump 24% under AEL&P permanent rate plan

Alaska Electric Light & Power Company is seeking state approval for a permanent rate increase that would raise residential peak energy charges by 24 percent and monthly customer fees by 45 percent. The Regulatory Commission of Alaska is accepting public comments on the proposal through 5:00 p.m. on May 28, 2026.

Under the permanent rate plan, residential customers would see peak energy charges rise from 12.29 cents per kilowatt-hour to 15.21 cents. Monthly customer charges would jump from $10.08 to $14.57. If the commission suspends the tariff for investigation, AEL&P requests a 12.5 percent interim increase starting June 26, 2026, on a refundable basis.

Small commercial customers would face similar increases. Peak energy charges would rise from 11.78 cents per kilowatt-hour to 14.94 cents under the permanent plan. Large commercial customers would see peak energy charges increase from 6.22 cents to 7.73 cents per kilowatt-hour, with demand charges rising from $14.56 per kilowatt to $18.10.

The commission may approve rates that differ from those proposed.
