State seeks public comment on Thunder Creek placer mining expansion

The Alaska Department of Natural Resources is accepting public comments through May 4 on a proposal to expand placer mining operations on Thunder Creek in the Yentna Mining District near Klukwan.

Lyle Downing has applied to add mining claims and modify his existing mine plan for suction dredging and placer mining activity on state lands. The amendment would extend operations through December 31, 2028, and authorize winter cross-country travel on state lands outside the mining locations.

The proposed work would take place in Section 30, Township 28 North, Range 9 West, Seward Meridian. The application includes requests for a Miscellaneous Land Use Permit, an Approved Plan of Operations, and Reclamation Plan Approval under state mining regulations.

After reviewing public comments, the department may issue an authorization with conditions for the activity. The proposal may be modified during the review process.
