State seeks public comment on Muldoon Road resurfacing project by May 24

The Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities is accepting public comments through May 24, 2026, on a proposal to resurface Muldoon Road from DeBarr Road to Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson Gate Number 3 in Anchorage.

The project would extend the road's service life and reduce maintenance costs through pavement preservation, safety improvements, and drainage upgrades. Construction is scheduled to begin in summer 2030.

Proposed work includes resurfacing, repairing or replacing traffic signals and street lighting, improving intersections and crosswalks, upgrading drainage facilities, and making bridge repairs. The project would also include maintenance of sidewalks, shared-use pathways, and pedestrian facilities with Americans with Disabilities Act improvements.

Parts of the project would encroach into the regulatory floodway associated with South Fork Chester Creek near the DeBarr Road intersection. The state said no net changes to base flood elevations are anticipated. Activities in the floodway would include vegetation clearing and hardware installation.

The project must comply with the National Historic Preservation Act, wetlands and floodplain protection orders, and the Clean Air Act and Clean Water Act.
